The story behind GhJ

Volkert Ruhe, initiator of GhJ, Hamburg
"We reach young people,
who otherwise won't listen to anyone anymore."
The idea for "Prisoners Helping Young People" originated in 1996 in the Fuhlsbüttel prison (JVA).
named «Santa-Fu», through the initiative of Volkert Ruhe, who served his sentence for cocaine smuggling in South America.
During his imprisonment, he reflected on his own biography and realized that he might be less capable or even less capable.
Had he not committed any crimes, he would have been shown life in prison as a teenager.
Thus, the basic idea developed of protecting at-risk youth by confronting them with everyday prison life.
and to use the prisoners' biographies to discourage them from a criminal career. Affected young people should be warned before
to protect against the serious and far-reaching consequences of crime (isolation, loneliness, lack of autonomy, emotional impoverishment, violence, deportation). Volkert Ruhe's motivation for this project was to...
to protect others from a similar fate, to come to terms with one's own past and to make amends
to atone for one's own transgressions.
